Vorbis mod dialogue speed issue since 1.0.9
« on: April 14, 2021, 03:48:36 PM »
Reposting my issue from the old board:

Hey!

There is some kind of speed issue with the Vorbis mod (1.7), I made a quick video about the issue: https://youtu.be/rRP90lUx6T8
In the video I delete my config file and start playing with 1.0.8, voices are perfectly normal in Kendo’s shop. Then I switch to 1.0.9 and delete my config again (just to make sure it’s not some kind of conflict with the settings) and you can hear that the voices are much "deeper" and a bit slower, it even cuts Leon’s sentence… I didn’t show in the video but I also tried with the “Legacy framerate” option, but same result.

As a test I grabbed the Classic Rebirth HQ pack from here: http://re123.bplaced.net/board/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=308
I extracted the 3 folders, added a custom “manifest.txt” and 7zipped them (using “s=off” like said in the docs). When I boot the game and select that new mod, voices work like a charm with it. However it’s much, much bigger than the vorbis one obviously (~900MB vs. ~200MB). If anyone is interested: https://mega.nz/file/FnJjwIDQ#ptm8x3sdmsXlvSFKxzfUKD7YsoDri_7ttqqRs6Wj1Yk (I kept the creator name and the special thanks in the description of the mod of course, I hope this is OK to share).
So idk, looks like 1.0.9 doesn’t like vorbis compression anymore for some reason?

No idea what's the cause, since I haven't done anything to the sound, but the RE2CR page now forwards to lexas87's release.
Make retro PC ports great again.

I feel like lexas87's release might be confusing to some people, since it's not a regular mod that you just select when booting the game, and it includes an older RE2CR version (1.0.2 I believe), the one from my link uses the exact same files but is repackaged as a proper mod, you can double check it and even rehost it somewhere if you want, I didn't slap my name anywhere, I don't want/need any credits for just repackaging 3 folders and creating 2 .txt files :D

Still a weird issue, especially if you didn't touch anything related to sound :p I wanted to mess a bit with it by recompressing with vorbis but with different settings, but I have absolutely no idea how to convert these .sap files :D

Reinstalled RE2 + Rebirth mod few days ago and wanted to revisit this, I couldn't find any doc on the SAP format but I figured most of how it works by myself (concatening the files, putting the sizes and the number of files in the footer for SAP with multiple audio files, etc.).

With my limited skills I managed to make a shell script to repack all my OGG files (converted from the 2023 version of lexar87's mod), the only thing I couldn't figured out is the header of the SAP files, so I just ended up using the header of the original files and it seems to work.

Do you know any way for "verifying" SAP files? I played a bit and it seems to work great but I'm not feeling like replaying the 4 scenarios, visiting every single room, triggering every sound, etc. just to double check if everything is OK :'( I thought I could use the "SOUND TEST" from the debug menu, but it is greyed out :(

Here's the mod if anyone is interested (as mentioned above IT WAS NOT FULLY TESTED): https://mega.nz/file/IyZiELDQ#rjIc2PRSvDrbRtf339JGNszjyELrmBGN5rZvCCDKfuQ

As for the issue itself, I could be wrong of course but my guess is that it's because of the sample rate, the original vorbis mod has 37.8kHz files, I'm using 44.1kHz files and they're not distorted or anything. As to why it worked before 1.0.9, no idea :P
